How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of teeth without removing any of the tooth surface or causing damage. Professional teeth whitening use chemical agents to gently removes surface extrinsic stains, as well as deeper intrinsic stains.

  • The most two common whitening agents used are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.
  • These peroxides will penetrate the enamel and release oxygen free radicals, which breakdown stains into smaller and less pigmented molecules, making the tooth appear whiter.
  • The cleaning agents can be combined with light or laser treatment to accelerate the reaction, for a much faster result than at-home teeth whitening kits.

Am I Suitable For Teeth Whitening?

Your dentist will advise whether you are a suitable candidate for teeth
whitening. Teeth whitening can only lighten your teeth colour and will not necessarily make your teeth completely white. The treatment will only work on natural teeth and not on any types of false teeth, such as dentures, crowns or any veneers you may have.

The Benefits of Teeth Whitening By a Dentist

Stronger Whitening Agents

Dentists use clinical-grade whitening solutions that are more effective than over-the-counter products, delivering noticeable results faster.

Even, Consistent Results

Customised and precise application ensures consistent whitening across all teeth, avoiding blotchy or uneven results.

Immediate and Long-Lasting Results

Dental teeth whitening can produce visible results in just one visit, with effects that last longer with the proper aftercare.

Thorough Oral Health Check

Dentists examine your teeth and gums before whitening to ensure there are no underlying issues, like cavities or gum disease, that need to be addressed first.

Safely Provided By Dental Professionals

In some of our practices, we offer an in-surgery treatment which takes around an hour and can brighten your smile immediately.

Many people experience some sensitivity in their teeth whilst whitening. Enlighten treatment provides a desensitising treatment prior to whitening to reduce sensitivity, If you do experience sensitivity, smearing sensitive toothpaste on the affected areas works really well.

Please remember that it is illegal for anyone other than a fully qualified dentist to provide teeth whitening in the UK. You need to be over 18 to have your teeth whitened.
