What happens during an oral cancer screening?
During your oral cancer screening, our dentists will examine your mouth, throat, and surrounding areas for signs of cancer or early tissue changes. The process is typically quick and painless.
Steps involved in an oral cancer screening:
- Visual Examination:Â Inspection of your lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat for any abnormalities such as red or white patches, sores, or unusual lumps.
- Physical Examination: Examination of the tissues in your mouth, neck, and jaw to check for lumps or irregularities.
- Use of Special Tools: In some cases, special lights or dyes may be used to highlight abnormal tissues that are not visible to the naked eye.
If any suspicious areas are found, your provider may recommend further testing, such as a biopsy, to determine if cancer is present.
How often should I have an oral cancer screening?
We recommend annual screening for average-risk patients and twice a year for high-risk individuals, including heavy smokers, alcohol users, or those with previous oral lesions.
Is the screening examination painful?
No, oral cancer screening is completely painless. The visual oral examination and gentle check by touch cause no discomfort, making it suitable for patients of all ages.
What happens if something suspicious is found?
